Can't we all get along?

While I've never been a big fan of Real Networks, they recently issued a statement about their new "Harmony" cross-DRM technology. In short, this technology allows music purchased from Real Music to be played directly on the iPod (and other players) without having to do manual format conversions. Apple isn't happy about the technology, and according to a statement is looking into the legal ramifications under the DCMA and other laws.

Why don't they just start selling music in plain 'ol MP3 or some other unlocked format and save everyone the trouble? If people are going to pirate music, no amount of DRM is going to stop them. DRM hurts the honest customers of any of the online music stores, and barely even slows down the illegal copying of music, so why bother?
