P2P Backups?
Friday, September 10, 2004 at 2:09PM Robert X. Cringely suggests a new kind of peer-to-peer backup service whereby chunks of backup data are shared via a secured P2P network. Each user of the network acts a backup of the others, and the data is transferred, stored, and recovered in a BitTorrent-like fashion. Sounds like a great idea, although the security and privacy issues would have to be carefully considered. Nonetheless, it would be neat to see something like this implemented in a simple enough fashion for inexperienced users to be able to backup to an offsite location automatically.

I'm CEO of 312, Inc. (www.312inc.com). That said, the company has released a solution that Cringley speaks of. There is some chatter about it on slashdot, sourceforge, techdirt and other places.
It is called LeanOnMe (with PeerSite Small Business coming this week). Feel free to give it a go. There is a free trial. Feel free to write me at brian[dot]neilson[at]312inc[dot]com if you have questions or like it enough to request a few licenses for free. I'll send you the keys. Keep the faith! Hard road ahead for P2P but we are fighting the good fight.
