R.I.P. Palm OS?

Palm announced today a new Treo device running Windows Mobile 5.0. While this has long been a rumor, the new device is now official and will initially be offered on the Verizon wireless network. I've always been a fan of Palm OS, but a lack of recent innovation has really allowed the Windows Mobile platform to take over. The whole Handspring "spin off" of sorts, split of OS and hardware units (PalmSource/PalmOne), and related name changes hasn't helped anything either.
