I recently got the LaCie d2 external DVD writer and it works great on both my PC and Macs. Aside from supporting all of the various DVD writing formats (why are there so many again?) it also will burn onto dual-layer DVDs for a total of 8.5 gigabytes of storage. One of the cooler features is support for LightScribe, which is used to burn "labels" onto CDs and DVDs. While you need special LightScribe optical media, it produces a professional looking label burned right onto the top side of the disk. It does take a while - a "full mode" label (covering the entire side of the disk) can take 15 minutes or so to "print", but the results are much better than the stick-on labels or the good 'ol Sharpie.
